What do agents do for their commission?
Generally, literary agents take 15% of their clients’ earnings as their commission. Julia Churchill explains what she does in her role of literary agent in return for that percentage.
My role as a literary agent is to help my authors have successful careers. I endeavour to make money in as many rights streams as possible (with an eye on the long term), and enable an easier professional life for my clients so that they can focus on writing. My job involves spotting talent, helping to develop it and selling it.
Some of my clients came to me as established authors wanting to take their careers up a gear, but most have come via my slush pile, as debut writers. I get well over 100 submissions a week, and I may take on a new writer every few months (if I’m lucky). Spotting talent is often where my job starts. I think I have good taste, and I know that my taste isn’t unique. If I love a book, it is likely that there are others who will love it too.
I tend not to follow trends, but I am aware of them. There are two markets to consider, and a good agent will have a clear understanding of both. The first is what I focus on when I sell books to publishers. The editor is the buyer and I need to think about their enthusiasms and needs for their list. Then there’s the real market, which is reflected in what people are buying from booksellers right now. Both these markets change constantly and part of my job is to keep up to date with trends, and the preferences of individual editors. This knowledge feeds into my decision-making when considering new authors and guidance for my existing clients, although there are also many opportunities outside of obvious trends. To some extent I’m looking for what’s fashionable, but more than anything I’m looking for what may be evergreen.
What I am looking for
When I read a manuscript, I’m looking to connect with a voice, a concept, a character and a story, a book with something to say. I’m looking for clarity and intent in the storytelling, and to be taken somewhere new.
Most debut manuscripts that arrive in my office are not yet ready to sell to a publisher, and I may work with the author to focus on what’s best about the character(s) and story. Every edit is different. We may sit down together with a cup of tea and talk through the book, exploring such questions as: What does the writer do best? Where does the story lose focus? How can we keep raising the stakes? Why does this section not work? Is it needed? Is the story pulling in too many directions? What is the book about, in the small ways and the big ways?
Before I offer to represent an author, I’ll talk them through the work that I think their manuscript needs. I want to be sure,
